Sushi: Cure For A Food Rut

LOVE sushi!  Adore it! If I could have one meal for the rest of my life-it would be sushi!

However, I tend to get in food ruts even with my beloved sushi. Ordering the same things. This is one way I stay in my comfort zone, by eating the same things and going to the same places.

So let’s just change things up! Life is too short, and there are too many choices, to keep the same things on the menu.

A while back my hubby and I went to our favorite Japanese restaurant and I decided to try something different. Along with my usuals (red snapper sashimi, tuna sushi, sweet shrimp sushi, and a salad)  I also ordered sea urchin, salmon skin roll, and albacore belly.

Each of these made me cringe a little just saying the names. But, after consulting with the waitress . . . I went for it!

All I can say is I’m glad I tried them. They were . . . different.

The salmon skin roll was made of fried salmon skin on the inside, wrapped in rice and seaweed, and topped with shaved bonita flakes I believe. The taste was like smoked fish and was a little too salty and crunchy for me. I gave it a 3 on a 10 scale.

The albacore belly was better. More in my wheelhouse as far as sushi goes, but a little on the slimy side. Feeling a slimy texture isn’t good when you’re saying the word belly in your mind as your eating it.

The sea urchin or uni was a definite no go for me. The texture was blob like. Soft and malleable. The taste was like the strongest ocean smell you could imagine. Not just fishy, but as if you were eating the bottom of the ocean. Some people love it, but the uni was just not for me.

The waitress did say with each of these you either love em or hate em. Well, I didn’t love em.

But, what I did love was the stoke I felt for stepping out of my box. This feeling, along with the yumminess of my usual order, helped me to leave the restaurant with a smile.

Whether or not sushi is your thing, if you feel yourself in a food rut, step out and try something new. It can be something simple, like an addition to your usuals or something drastic like a whole meal overhaul.

This is a simple way to spice up your life. Maybe literally.

Are you in a food rut or do you like to mix it up? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
