More Than A Surfer

When Tiare and I started Wahine Wednesdays all those months ago, coming up with a name was challenging.  We originally called it 52 Wednesdays because this was our goal.  To surf every Wednesday for a year…52 Wednesdays.  But when looking to start the blog, 52 Wednesdays was taken.  We tossed many ideas back and forth and Wahine Wednesdays seemed to be the perfect fit.

Wahine actually means woman.  Not surfer. Not surfer girl.  Not woman who surfs.  Just woman. So actually, the name Wahine Wednesdays implies less about surfing and more about women.  It’s literally Woman Wednesday.  🙂  And in a way it is!  It is about women finding their joy, no matter what form that may take.  It’s about living large.  It’s about women who go for it.  And also the men who support them!!  Wahine Wednesdays isn’t just for the girls!

If you follow WW or have stopped by, you know that surfing is in our soul.    And this blog started with that.  You also may know that it is about much more.  It is about Tiare and me exposing what we are made of. Our thoughts, feelings, experiences and dreams.

The role of surfing wahine is what brought us together.  Our mutual love of the ocean and a sport that thrills us.  The decision to set a goal to help us reconnect with our stoke, our joy, is one of the things that continues to bond us.

WW was born out of the desire to set this goal.  But what has emerged is so much greater than just surfing every Wednesday for a year.  I have discovered parts of myself that have been in hiding…dormant for too long.  And also pieces of me that are new, in their infancy and have never been nurtured.

Through this experience I am discovering who I am in this world.  I am attempting to adapt and change with the continual movement of life. Just as the ocean is in a constant state of flux; morphing and transitioning with developing swells, shifts in wind, the receding and building of tides, and drops in temperature; so am I transforming into something new.

There have been readers who found us because of our name….wahine.  People who aren’t surfers but connect with us despite our surfing.

There are also readers who follow WW because we ARE surfers.  They read because of the surfing.  They get a bit perplexed at times when we post things not specifically surf related.  But they stay anyway.  They realize no one is defined by any one label.  There are other facets of our lives that explain us as well.  We are moms, nature lovers, wives, creative souls, daughters, friends and sisters.  I am a traveler in my heart, adventure seeker in my core, striver of large life living, and wanna be singer and dancer.

Tiare and I may post things that are not connected to surfing.  We are, after all, multidimensional.

Surfing is one part of me but wahine describes me.  A woman; equipt with all the complexity and gloriousness that that entails.

My piece of this blog is an expression of me…life through my surf eyes.  But eyes that are open to seeing so much more than just the waves.

Salty Kisses,

K
