Joy Is Found In The Sea

It is no secret I have been wrestling with the impending completion of our Wahine Wednesday goal.  The achievement of surfing every Wednesday for a year which is quickly approaching.  I have been questioning whether or not to continue beyond the 52 weeks and if we do, what that might look like.  At times, I am almost ambivalent about it…which is not a place I like to be.

I have found myself very reflective on the process of these past 40+ weeks.  Where we started those many months ago and where we are now.  Where I started and where I am now.  Trying to decide which way to go.

Yesterday in the water there was a gaggle of surfers enjoying the WW tradition.  As I was catching my last wave, I paddled by Kevin.  Kevin is a surfer we see occasionally at The River and Bolsa who has participated in WW a few times.  We exchange hellos and as I’m gliding past, he yells with a grin “Wahine Wednesday!”

I shout back,  “You got that right!”

This makes me smile.

I don’t think of it again until later that night.  I ruminate on Wahine Wednesdays and the affect it has had on me.  The affect it has had on others, if any.  My mind then drifts to Tiare’s daughter.  I think of a time back in June when she joined us in the water one WW.

On that WW in June the weather was nice and the waves were marginal but having a mini- wahine in the water made it so much more.  Her presence made it fantastic.  Her energy and enthusiasm for WW was palpable.

She “gets it”.  She totally supports what her mom and I are doing and she has been ALL IN since the inception.  She has also been her mom’s biggest cheerleader!

How awesome!

Our endeavor is appreciated by a 12 year old.

I love that at her tender age she appreciates the value of a commitment, the importance of setting goals, and the significance of fun in your life!

It touches my heart.  Just as when all the old salts in the water, like Kevin, acknowledge Wahine Wednesdays, I am equally touched that this little grom “gets it.”

She doesn’t think her mom and her friend are embarrassing.  (Well, she probably does but not in this situation anyway.)  🙂   She doesn’t think we are silly for wanting to surf every Wednesday for a year.  She embraces it.  She’s excited about it.

She DIGS Wahine Wednesdays! So much so she wants to be a part of it.  And that is the best endorsement we could get.

As I bring myself back to present day, I realize, Wahine Wednesdays needs to keep going. We need to continue this somehow, maybe with an added goal or challenge.  But WW needs to remain sacred.

WW needs to stay the course.  To remind women, young and old what magnificent goddesses they are.  To give them permission to reconnect with the childlike joy that gets buried beneath all the shoulds and have tos. To show our young wahines that we are responsible for our own delight and we can do whatever we set our minds to.

And Wahine Wednesdays, I have found, also impacts the men.  It helps them see women taking charge of their happiness.  Women who make no excuses for wanting joy in their lives.

I have come to see there is no need to wrestle with the completion of our goal.  No need to overthink things and make decisions harder than they need to be.  Wahine Wednesdays has been special and that at the very least, it brings people together and makes them smile.

Salty Kisses,

Karen

  1. I am delighted that you’ve got your “stoke” back, …and that we can continue to experience the joy and all the lessons from the sea (even if is from the shore). Glad you have decided to continue WW…Much love on the journey.
