How the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Impacts Our Kids

Just A Brief Thought On The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Well, it seems the dust has settled.  Our social media sites are no longer filled with videos of people dumping ice water on their heads to raise money and awareness for ALS.  We seemed to have come full circle.  From the curiosity and excitement about the challenge.  To the enjoyment and laughter from watching people’s reactions.  To the backlash of some being concerned about wasting water and just being “over it.”  And finally, hopefully, to educating ourselves about what it’s all about.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, which I can’t imagine if you are on any form of social media, read more here.  Basically, it was a viral phenomenon that raised millions for people with the disease ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

It has been discussed ad nauseam and I have nothing new to add to the conversation except one thing.

No matter how you feel about the ice bucket challenge, our kid’s generation now knows what ALS is.  Our kids, because of their social media addictions, saw people talking about ALS.  Whether they did the challenge or not,  whether they donated or not,  they are growing up aware of this deadly disease and hopefully poised to do something about it.  It went from a silent disease that no one really heard about or understood to something that we, and our kids, heard about daily.

Awareness and knowledge are power.  So all those silly videos and ice cubes that went down the drain have been worth it. It has empowered our kids and put them in a position to make a difference.

Thanks for listening.

Salty Kisses,

Karen
