“Love would never leave us alone.” Bob Marley

Today in the water was a Bob Marley kind of day.  It was a beautiful day with bright warm sun and small gentle waves.  The conversation with Candace came easy.

I feel surfing and reggae are connected somehow.  Maybe it is the prevailing message of peace and harmony that both can bring.   Maybe it’s how reggae and the ocean both have a way of inspiring people.  Maybe it’s because both bring a relaxed and easy feeling.

Music, for me, is incredibly spiritual.  It stirs something in my soul.  It connects me with something intangible.  It helps me uncover and express different emotions.  I LOVE listening to songs that move me, that reach inside my heart and guts and make me FEEL.  Divulging favorite artists, songs, genres or lyrics can reveal to others a bit about who I am in my core.

I am a freak about listening to live music.  I REALLY love going to festivals where I have a chance to hear some of my favorite bands but also discover new and lesser known musicians.  It’s like opening a buried treasure…you never know what fabulous things you might find.

The injustice in all this is that I can not carry a tune.

I do NOT let this keep me from belting out songs on a continual basis however, just ask my kids.

I also do not play any instruments (although most of my bad ass surf sisters do)… unless of course you count the maracas or egg shaker.

I simply accept the fact that I have gifts in other areas.  And I refuse to let my lack of God given musical talent keep me from enjoying and connecting with music.

Bob Marley is one of my all time favorite artists.  An amazing example of love, acceptance, and peace.  As I said in my About page, I believe we are put here to love and be loved.  I feel Bob is the epitome of that.  I was just feeling the love today and wanted to share.

Enjoy!

  1. I completely count the egg shakers and the maracas!!! By the way, thanks for sharing a Bob Marley kinda day with me:)

  2. What about the Music for Peace version of “We Don’t Need No More Trouble”? Third world musicians, street and pro, spliced together for a fantastic mosaic of sound, movement and groove. I think about it all the time while alone with the noggin thoughts in the water. Blessed with off the hook surf at PB Point north of Tourmaline Surf Park. Just as good, but not as big, as the surf at San Carlos Baja Mexico last month. Really been gettin lucky lately. om shanti ladies.
