With the new year comes a lot of talk about goal setting.

As we all embark on our dream chasing; formulating our list of plans, goals, resolutions, etc., for the new year, I thought I’d pass along my list of tips that I feel are crucial to reaching your goals.

This isn’t the goal setting process itself per se, it is the supporting cast of what is needed to help you get from the starting gate to the finish line.

Tips To Help You Reach Your Goals

-When setting your goals consult your inner voice. Get quiet and listen. Make sure the goals you are setting are in line with your values and have meaning for you. Don’t make a goal something you think you should do. Like, “I probably should get more organized.” Make you goal something that speaks to your heart.

-Make sure your goals are achievable and realistic under your circumstances. Becoming a pro surfer might be out if you live in South Dakota. Set yourself up for success.

-Write your goals down. Post them in a place you will see them everyday. My goals are above my desk. Maybe yours will go on the mirror in the bathroom. Just make them visible where you are confronted with them daily so you are constantly reminded of your plans.

-Envision what the achievement of this goal looks like.  For example: If you want to complete a triathlon, close your eyes and imagine yourself at the end of the race, falling into the embrace of your loved one. Do this daily.

-Listen to how you speak about your goal. Talk about it  like it’s going to happen. When I changed my verbiage from, “I want to start a business,” to “I am starting a business,” this created a shift and the pieces started coming together.

-Tell people about your goal. Once you put it out there into the world, two things will happen. First, you become accountable. People will ask you about your goal to see how it’s going.  Second, once you put your dreams out into the world, the universe will conspire to make them a reality.

-Challenge you inner critic. The voice in your head can be a real jerk sometimes! It will try to discourage you. Don’t let it. (Here’s how to silence her/him.)

-Adopt a kick ass attitude. Nothing can keep you from achieving your goals but yourself. (As long as you followed tip #1 and #2.) Believe your dreams will happen.

-Truly believe that your goals/plans/dreams are achievable. (Again, see #1 and #2) If Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey can achieve their dreams, why can’t you?

-Attack your goals with courage. Making a change always brings anxiety, this is normal. But never, ever, ever, EVER, let your fear keep you from reaching your true potential. You are greater than you fear.

  1. I love goal setting and working towards them, I tend to take on too much and then get overwhelmed so I’m learning to set smaller more manageable goals and take it one day at a time. Doing my best everyday to attack my goals works for me.

    • Yes Tanya! Good point! I think sometimes we get so excited we want to do it ALL NOW! (Speaking from experience here.) Once I learned the baby steps are just as important as the leaps, it helped me focus and like you said, make more manageable goals. Good luck with all your goals, big and small, and thank you for your comment! 🙂

  2. I love this Karen! I’m a huge believer in how I feel when I say, “I’m doing X” Or “I am ___.” For example, when I say, “I’m speaking in front of thousands of women…” my inner happy dance breaks out. I know, at a soul level, that this goal, this intention, is where I’m going 🙂

  3. I am a massive goal setter and just wrote two posts about my personal and business goals for this year. One thing that seems to really work is keeping them visible. I’m making a poster for my wall with my goals because honestly, out of site, out of mind. LOVED this post!

  4. This is awesome, Karen! I especially love the part about listening to how we speak about our goals. By just making that little change of “I want ….” to “I am ..” can make a HUGE difference! I hope you reach all of your goals and more, actually, I know you will! 🙂

  5. Oooh, I have a suggestion –

Sometimes setting yourself a deadline for a goal is good, but sometimes you might come up with a goal that doesn’t need one – just let it float out there peacefully and be ready to jump when things line up. That’s how I pulled off my solo paddle down the Hudson River Watertrail from Waterford, NY to Brooklyn, NY – I’d gotten it into my head that I wanted to do that years ago, and then all of the sudden things lined up perfectly to do it in 2014 and bingo, I did it. AWESOME trip and maybe all the more so because during the years when it was just a pipe dream, I didn’t kick myself for not having done it yet. No huhu!

  6. Attacking our goals with courage can be the hardest I think. My experience is that a lot of people don’t achieve because of this. Having someone to hold your accountable and spur you on can help to overcome that hurdle.

    • I agree Fiona! That’s why I feel putting our goals out there, telling people about them, helps keep us on track! Thank you so much for reading and for your comment!
